Ruth asks…

How powerful is the solar panel in terms of electricity generation?

I am wondering if the use of solar panel as energy generators can overtake or become more handy than our conventional power supply which is reliant on crude oil. With recent rises in crude oil or follow on increase in both gas & electricity bill, I think the big economies should be thinking of an alternative solution or else the oil producing nations and/or the oil cartels will undermine the developed world – the west. Remember, in any recession natural resources speaks.

admin answers:

Using a solar panel to provide domestic power requirements has been likened to filling a lake with an egg cup. Sadly, one decent size (and very expensive) solar panel will only provide enough power to light one standard light bulb

James asks…

Why is war even still going on?

Why are the soldiers still over in the Middle-East and risking their lives, I don’t see a point in the war.

Is the war even close to coming to an end?
Why can’t the U.S. just contribute more money in researching alternative ways to fuel our energy instead of wasting precious resources and polluting the earth. At this rate, the world probably is coming to end soon.

admin answers:

I agree with you 100%. What we’re doing is not only killing people but destroying the lives of our solider’s and their families for the rest of their lives because of stupid US government decisions! We were taught to kill as young children starting with our toys. Yeah, watch what happens with N. Korea as they have our pussy president at a mexican standoff. But, your right, the bombs are going to fall! Yes, it’s going to come to an end (in part) and it’s not going to be pretty!

Mandy asks…

how does hydropower work?

I have to write a paper on an alternative resource and I chose hydropower. Can somebody explain how we get the energy from dams and rivers? I need to how the water turns the turbines in a dam and stuff like that.;

admin answers:

Electricity is always (except a PV cell) created by turning a coil of wire around a magnetic field. This generates a flow of electrons (aka electricity). So, you really just need to get something to turn. Usually, you burn some fuel to heat water to steam which expands and pushes through a fan-like thing called a turbine that is attached to the old coil of wires.
With Hydropower, instead of heating water to make the turbines turn, gravity forces the water to push through the turbine and turn them. A damn allows the water to build up. You then control how much water to release through the turbine cylinders as it generates electricity.

Susan asks…

issues related to the environment!!!!?

1. Should national environmental policy focus on developing more oil resources, or developing renewable energy sources?
2.Should our national energy policy focus on building more nuclear power plants?
3.How does overseas oil dependency influence our economy/international policies?
4.Should the government offer tax credits (lower taxes) for the purchase of hybrid or alternative energy vehicles?
5.Should environmental studies become a mandatory part of science classes in public schools?
6.Should regulations on corporate pollution be increased, decreased or left the same? Why?
7.Should more civilian oversight be created to monitor government and military pollution?

admin answers:

1. No-we need resources we can keep lasting without running low.
2.yes/no-nuclear is the cheapest but also the most dangerous to us and the environment.
3.oil is used to run over 98% of land and air and seas vehicles, the other 2% are solar/electricity powered.
4.yes-it would save a lot of money on oil being hybrids don’t use that much.
5.yes-it helps understand the world we live in, in modern days
6.decreased-pollution in some cities is so bad they can’t walk outside without a gas mask
7.yes-all pollution should be cut down period.

Robert asks…

Why don’t all OPEC countries place explosives and missiles targeting their own oil fields?

This would allow them to feel more safe in case of an invasion of their oil fields in the future? If anyone comes to invade, what the OPEC members would do would be to just destroy their oil fields and refineries.

No one wants a desert that has no natural resources so I assume the invading countries would just leave them be.

Wouldn’t this be a good form of self defense for the oil companies?

The reason I am asking this is because I see a possibility of large scale wars in the future for energy if we don’t start investing and mass producing alternative fuels.

admin answers:

First of all, the invasion and occupation of Iraq is already a large scale war, and while it may not be entirely about oil, obviously Iraq having the world’s second largest proved oil reserves isn’t a coincidence. You future is already here, though it may get much worse.

Secondly, oil facilities are very “soft” targets and it would take special forces hours to set up explosives and do crippling damage to them. So there’s no need to pre-position explosives where they could be stolen or used by insurgents. And there’s plenty of missiles already targeting oil facilities, so there again you are on the money.

James asks…

Is Obama Complaining Because of Sarah Palin Pointing Out His Mistakes?

He says that she didn’t deal with issues even though she said this:

“…But he fact that drilling won’t solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all. Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to lay more pipelines … build more nuclear plants … create jobs with clean coal … and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal and other alternative sources. We need American energy resources, brought to you by American ingenuity, and produced by American workers…”

Energy is an issue, and being in control of 20% of America’s energy, it’s an issue she knows best. Get real Obama, she spoke about the issues more than your attack dog Joe Biden.

So that’s my question, does Obama have a real reason to complain about her not talking about the issues, or was what I just said a lie?

admin answers:

Sarah Palin was out to establish herself last night, and she was most successful. It is John McCain’s job to address the issues tonight. Her job was to defend the democratic accusations as to her talents and experience. She pointed out that she got more votes as Mayor then Biden got for presidency, she also pointed out that her experience in leading a town, and the state of Alaska as Governor, is more experience than Obama and Biden have combined. Amazing how this young women has both candidates on the defense, and has taken them off the offense.

Lizzie asks…

How come Barack Obama & his campaign said “No” ideas came from the RNC that would help middle class Americans?

I’ve heard Biden say this morning he caught the last half of the speech… and I’ve also heard that Barack obama said they didn’t even see of all of Sarah Palin’s speech…

Is this the part that they missed?

“Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America’s energy problems – as if we all didn’t know that already. But the fact that drilling won’t solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all. Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to lay more pipelines … build more nuclear plants … create jobs with clean coal … and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative sources. We need American energy resources, brought to you by American ingenuity, and produced by American workers.” ~ Sarah Palin

Wouldn’t creating these kind of jobs help middle class Americans?

Yes We CAN!! Good post! It’s a little amazing and condescending to me that neither Obama or Biden felt it was worth their time to even watch the speech. Are they so arrogant that they feel it was unnecessary? That really makes me angry!!

Name on of the energy alternatives that is being used in Newcastle?
and
Why do you think we need more energy today than say than in 1900? Give three specific examples.
Thanks for all your help

admin answers:

Edit: Actually John McCain said: “We make History. We are not victims of it”. (Right on Baby!)

Indeed I agree with McCain, and his values for America. He is a man of substance, as he has proven without words. It only takes an ear to listen to his story, and not even a kind one. Joe Biden acknowleged he would be proud to run with, McCain. “Uh” Liberals won’t like what he said about Obama…It’s not time for America to have an “on the job training” President during the Democratic debates.

Here’s a nice link to show how much Democrat (leaders) RESPECT John McCain. This is enjoyable, so click it please. (There’s a clip in there about how John McCain will work with Democrats to make jobs).

Liberal voters don’t know this about their leaders, but if they click the link, they will!

God Bless America because Liberal voters never will.

admin answers:

First answer was interesting…I was thinking the exact opposite…I’d put money on WW3 before the end of his second term should Obama be elected.

I agree with your assessment…McCain/Palin is the way to go if job growth is the criterion…and not just because of the obvious growth opportunities he mentioned in his speech. Obama’s plan sounds good on the surface…stimulate consumer spending by increasing support given to the lowest income brackets…simultaneously increase spending on education and job training to prepare people for better paying jobs…increase taxes on the wealthy and businesses to pay for these programs.

The problem is that they are just adding another layer to an impresive multi-level house of cards they’ve been building in Washington for decades…and this layer could be the one that brings the whole house down! The tax burden already influences the behavior of people in the highest tax brackets…and that influence is often negative for our economy. The wealthiest people (and corporations) hire a team of tax attorneys and accountants (and pay them a hefty salary) to find loopholes in the law they can take advantage of by the way they manage their wealth (foreign investment for example). …but those that aren’t among the wealthiest…but are still impacted by tax increases on the middle/upper tax brackets (along with other government-related burdens) are often forced into decisions that are detrimental to the long-term health of our economy.

For example, consider my former chiropractor…earned a lot of money when he started and invested it in stocks when the market was booming (dot.com boom)…increasing taxes (and other factors) drove him to transfer his wealth out of stocks and into government bonds (esp. Tax free bonds) before the bust! A few years later, facing increasing government obligations (and ridiculously high insurance premiums), he determined that he was working 50 – 60 hours a week (and employing two people) and earning less money from that work than he was from his investments…and that if he tightened his belt a bit (circulated LESS money in the economy), he could retire…in his 30s! How is that good for the economy? How is it good for the economy to increase taxes in a way that might force a great teacher to leave teaching because of the impact her wages have on her family’s tax bracket?

McCain’s approach not only keeps the energy-related jobs here, it also encourages investment in the economy by decreasing the tax burden for everyone. This stimulates both ends of the economic spectrum…giving lower income people more money to spend and making investment in the economy a more attractive option for the wealthiest.

Unfortunately, McCain’s plan may appear to increase unemployment in the short run…if he shrinks the government as he claims to want to do, there will be jobs lost in the government sector…but frankly, I think that’s the way we need to go if we want the economy to be strong in the future!

Susan asks…

Now that gas prices aren’t strangling us at the moment, I see OPEC is going to cut production by 1.5 million..?

barrels a day in an attempt to keep prices up. Drill, drill, drill, will only get us into a deeper hole in my opinion. It will waste time and resources that could be used in developing alternative energy sources. I’m not saying we should stop drilling, I’m saying it should not be our top priority.

Should freedom from foreign oil be our next big push in this country?

admin answers:

Absolutely! Even though OPEC has agreed to cut production, so many of the oil producing states are in such financial turmoil, eg : bolivia, Venezuala, Russia, they will cheat and pump more than what they agree to verbally. Regardless, answering your question, we do want freedom from foreign oil. It is up to congress to wisen up, and remove restrictions.

Lizzie asks…

12/21/12 End of the world??

Will the world end on such a day, like the ancient Mayans and Nostradamus have predicted. Society is not prepared for an oil shortage. We’re already seeing Earth’s superpowers setting their pieces on the middle-eastern chessboard. We’re not devoting enough resources and time to alternative energy sources. Is global warming causing stronger hurricanes and may even lead to an ice age. Why is noone doing anything!!???
Ok the real focus of this question was what are we doing to stop our decaying Earth!?

admin answers:

Actually, that’s a misconception.

The Mayan calendar goes beyond 2012, indicating that they thought we’d still be around and need a calendar.

Mark asks…

Do Christians want the Earth to become uninhabitable?

I am searching for answers, I am not trying to offend anyone. By Christians I mean conservative Christians, such as members of the Christian Coalition.

Do Christians believe that animal extinction, global warming, depletion of natural resources, pollution, and so on are all part of the end of the world, and Jesus’ second coming?

If so, why don’t they believe their God is strong enough to destroy the Earth on his own without the help of man?

If not, why don’t most Christians support the Green movement (as in anti-global warming, alternative energy sources, conservation efforts)? Why do most conservative Christians think it is such an evil cause?
**** I mean Christians that are part of a very conservative fundamental movement, similar to and probably part of the Christian Coalition, headed by Pat Robertson! ****

I AM NOT GROUPING ALL CHRISTIANS TOGETHER, READ THE ENTIRE QUESTION.
**** Additional clarification: the Green Movement I am speaking of has nothing to do with the Green Party….read the entire question slowly and maybe more than once if you are having a difficult time understanding. ****
* Thanks for all the honest answers. Sorry to cause such an uproar, I just wanted to get an idea of how many people believed that was true. I admire all the Christians who spoke out in their beliefs with a calm voice of reason.

As for the personal accusations directed towards me, I guess I was asking for it…unfortunately for you there was no background info for you to base your remarks on…therefore they just made you look more unstable…no worries though..deep breath, go to you happy place…away from the pc obviously. :) Namaste sister…we are one.

I don’t think christians want the earth to become uninhabitable. Where would we live?

I think you are making some very broard and general statements about all christians that aren’t true.

Linda asks…

Is the world prepared for an oil shortage?

It may not happen for another twenty years, then again it might. But, if we (the human race) cannot use fossil fuels as a form of energy/ natural resource, how will our lives change? Are their enough alternatives? Are we looking at an inevitable global depression?

admin answers:

I’ve spent an entire semester in university listening to and researching over this issue … And yes the “peak” has passed … If you look at the bell curve, we’re heading towards (or already are) on the decline side of the curve … And soon it’s going to be all over.

Basically we need to look into alternative source… And that’s where this thing gets tricky. Oil is, for the most part, needed for transportation… And cars and transport means that do not require fossil fuels are either not fast enough or they’re too expensive. So what to do now?

Well…. The answer lies in changing the minds of the human race… We live in an economy-driven world… They worry about making money, dont care where it comes from…

But the good news is that there’s an abundant amount of awareness about all the environmental issues out there… I’m in my 20s and i don’t remember this type of awareness happening 5 – 10 years ago… So we’re headed in the right direction… Question is are we alreadfy too late? The answer is: only time will tell!

And i can go on and on, but due to lack of time i have to end here … If i have more time before u close this q i might add more in!

Oh, but before i go… Here’s a recommendation (a documentary):
End of suburbia dicrected by gregory greene

it talks about the peak-oil crises!

Cheers!

Robert asks…

I have a serious question?

In the future, natural resources such as coal and oil will be used up. How can we save on resources? What alternative forms of energy are available?

admin answers:

What makes you think these will be used up?

There is plenty of coal and gas to be found.

——————-

How can we save on resources: Adopt conservation techniques, increase exploration to find new sources and reservoirs.

——————

What alternative forms of energy are available:

Solar, Wind, Nuclear. Of these, nuclear is the most feasible. But, environazis have shut down the development of nuclear plants (at least in the USA0.

So, we will continue to burn fossil fuels for energy.

Sandra asks…

Do You approve of the McCain/Palin “Road to Recovery”?

I do Believe John McCain working together with Sarah Palin will be able to turn this thing around—-and here’s why: John desires to drill here—-drill now—and refine–(JOBS)-that’s not the solution for long term but any and all helps—then he wishes to encourage the development of new technological break-throughs in energy alternatives (JOBS)—-he wishes to harvest the oil from shale (JOBS)—he wishes to harvest our natural gas which is abundant (JOBS)—it is his desire to Utilize and develop ‘clean-coal-technology’—a great resource.(JOBS)—-he wishes to harvest our own vast resources of chemicals that we have been buying from abroad—and refine it (Massive JOBS_—he desires to use solar and wind resources as energy alternatives (JOBS)—he would like to see more nuclear reactors built to provide clean affordable electricity that will be needed to supply our needs. They will be a FINE team!—-sure would like to hear Your thoughts on this!

admin answers:

I agree wholeheartedly. McCain will be able to create jobs by making the tax cuts permanent, giving incentives and initiatives for growth of the economy, and with Palin at his side, I am sure the drilling will get done as well as the search for alternative energy to make this nation independent and stronger than ever.

We are not negative, and it is the positives with the Republican party that will keep this country growing and prosperous.

I have faith in the free market system, and know that going down the road to socialism just will not work. I will help keep America strong with my vote.

Maria asks…

What’s the best way to end the US dependence on foriegn oil?

Is it more drilling to extract the remnants of a limited resource off our shores?

Or is it investing in alternative sources of energy, including encouraging automakers to think outside of the box of internal combustion engines?

admin answers:

It comes down to simple math.
The US holds about 3% of the world’s oil, yet we use about 25% of it. So the best, and really only, way to *completely* end dependence on foreign oil is to stop using oil! We don’t have enough in the US to feed our need, so as along as we continue to use oil, we will be dependent on foreign countries to provide it.
In order to do that, we need to shift our economy away from being petroleum-based. There are other sources of energy which can be used for the different sectors of our economy, from transportation to heating/cooling our buildings, and we need to develop those technologies and begin the conversion as soon as possible.

Thomas asks…

I have a vehicle concept that I want to develop with a major corporation. What do I do?

I have spent the last 7 years developing a vehicle that runs solely on alternative and/ or renewable energy resources. I want to put it into development, but I hardly have the funds to even begin such a project, so I want to reach out for help from a large corp, but have no idea how to start. Most of the big names in motor companies are inaccessible via email, and I definitely can’t get them on the phone. This idea is worth an untold fortune, and I NEED TO UTILIZE IT!! PLEASE HELP!!!

admin answers:

First you insure the integrity of your work by getting a patent otherwise you will not be the one getting the “untold fortune”, or even any reasonable portion of it.

Then you get some media attention. You make your own video and send it out to the news stations.

Then you wait until a corporation contacts YOU.

Or… You use snail mail and contact the “Research and Development Department” of major corporations and hope they toss you a bone if they decide you have something worth investing in.

Richard asks…

stable careers in automotive field?

Help me out here, if possible. any answer would be much appreciated. Currently, im in the 10th grade attending a high school in southern louisiana. Our school systems down here are much different basically making us choose our career path as soon as we get here. im not saying thats a bad thing by any means, but it worries me that ive chosen a career path that is not best suited for myself. im already taking classes under the health profession and i know thats not what i want to do. ever since i was 2, my passion has been in the automotive field. its much deeper than liking fast, exotic cars. im very much interested in alternative fuels and other energy resources. cars are my life. i could tell you every make, model, year, and body style of every car made in my generation and some a little further back. im constantly researching, looking up new and future models. checking what cars are sold in china or somewhere and how they differ in what automobiles are sold in the USA. im updated with all new, upcoming, and returning manufacturers in the USA. i know all designs. im not a technical kind of guy.. engines really arent my thing… i find cars to be beautiful. i love automobiles that have form. i dont love the pointy, fast, exotic cars that most guys gawk at. i love cars that are different. i love cars that are new, innovative, and intelligent. cars showing practicality.
seeing the small fraction of my passion and knowledge for this field, are there any careers that are stable that might be a good fit. and car designer isnt stable. where might this kind of information be useful? i know, in the economy, the automotive industry is very unstable, but when you are putting wealth and stability against true passion, the passion wins. i would be hating life if i took a job in the health field instead of doing what i know best.

admin answers:

Automotive career fields will always be needed, but diesel mechanics make on average between $100,000-$150,000 the first few years. This job entails working on like big rigs and tractors for oil companies usually. Hope this helped and good luck

Donald asks…

Agribusiness and Applied Economics vs Environmental Engineering for a Career?

I am a college student looking to get into alternative energy and natural resources careers after I graduate. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what major is more suited toward alternative energy and natural resources, what are the differences between the two careers and salary expectations? I have done a lot of research but I’m still not sure… Thanks.

admin answers:

Agribusiness and Applied Economics would deal with the business side of the Ag field. If you graduated with this degree you would be looking at a job such as a salesman, commodities trader, analyst, crop insurance and other financial jobs. Wages for these jobs vary widely, but most will be from the lower to mid range, some such as a commodities broker have the potential to pay very well.

Environmental Engineer is a broad term, but would be much closer to a job that you are looking for rather than the agribusiness. Jobs could be anything like a park engineer, jobs in conservation and anything else that requires a good amount of planning.

Generally, as with any type of engineer job, you will get paid very well. I have seen some colleges offering programs in alternative energy and conservation, but if these are the two choices you have, take the environmental engineer. The schooling is more intense, but the jobs pays much more and you will have many more options while working in the type of career you are looking for

Ken asks…

can any one help me in my science project….?

we hav to make a written project on conservation of natural resources. in it we have to give information about alternative energy sources.can any one suggest from where can i get the information.

admin answers:

Google! I’ll even help you with subjects to look up:

Wind energy. Hydro electrics, umm… Solar power, what else? Thats all i can think of, but thats a start. Even if you just google “alternative engery sources” you’ll get some good information.

Just be careful of wikipedia – its user based, not all the info is verified and many school will not accept it as a valid website for information.
